A Banquet for the Consumer Age

In Martin Parr’s work, food is never a simple subject; it is a way of observing society. In series such as The Last Resort, and in images like Clare College May Ball or Christmas, plates, snacks, and buffets act as social indicators. Parr does not photograph food to make it desirable. Instead, he shows it in its banality—often excessive, saturated with bright colors and industrial products. Through this visual strategy, he points to a simple reality: what we eat reflects the culture we live in.

In his photographs, food becomes a symptom of a society shaped by consumption. The images reveal a culture of abundance in which eating is no longer just a necessity but a standardized and globalized product. The irony often comes from the gap between these images and the promises of advertising: rather than elegant or refined, the food can appear awkward, even slightly repulsive. Parr exposes the absurdity of a world where consumption has become a spectacle.

This idea of food as a metaphor for consumption also appears in other contemporary works. In Camaleonda Sofa, Gab Bois transforms a design icon into something edible, suggesting that even cultural or luxury objects are ultimately meant to be “consumed.” In a more conceptual way, Daniel Spoerri’s Hahn’s (Last) Supper preserves the remains of a meal, turning the traces of consumption into an artwork.

Across these practices, food moves beyond its biological function. It becomes a critical language—a way to show how our desires, social rituals, and relationship to objects are deeply shaped by the logic of consumption. Parr’s images, both humorous and unsettling, are therefore not simply about food; they reveal how contemporary society, in many ways, feeds on itself.
