Repetitive Gestures Corporeal Interaction

In Rosas danst Rosas, Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker turns the body into an autonomous rhythmic instrument, foregrounding repetition as an expressive force rather than relying on narrative illusion. Dance is no longer a progression toward a “resolution,” but a temporal architecture built from recurring gestures. By contrast, Sylvia: pas de deux exemplifies classical virtuosity, where performance emphasizes fluidity and aesthetic unison, evoking harmony and a poetic relationship between the partners.

With Videoplace, Myron Krueger transforms technology into a space of corporeal dialogue: the work exists only through interaction, and the participant’s presence becomes the medium itself. Art ceases to be an object for contemplation and instead becomes a live relationship between human and machine.

This exploration of repetition and structure already emerges in Fase, Four Movements to the Music of Steve Reich (1982), De Keersmaeker’s first choreographic work. Composed of three duets and a solo, the piece is built on the minimalist music of Steve Reich and its principle of phase shifting. Rather than mirroring the score, the choreography develops a distinct gestural language that runs parallel to the music. Through subtle displacements, minute variations, and gradual temporal shifts, synchronized movements slowly fall out of phase, generating a complex, ever-changing interplay of forms.

Taken together, these works open onto a broader question: how art reconfigures our relationship to others, through approaches that move beyond pure aesthetics to engage with cooperation, tension, or confrontation between bodies (whether technical, natural, or social).
