Where Elders Fade
The figure of the orphan transcends a mere social status to become a true existential state. For Hirokazu Kore-Eda, as well as through the lens of Anna Craycroft, the child left to their own devices becomes the architect of a secret world. Stripped of adult supervision and protection, the children in Nobody Knows organize themselves and demonstrate a staggering resilience, just as the archetypal figure studied by Craycroft possesses that crucial "agency." This same sovereignty shines through Sally Mann's lens: her children, roaming wild in nature, embody an almost fierce freedom. They are not coddled; they face the harshness of the world, ruling over a kingdom from which adults seem entirely excluded.
However, this independence comes at the cost of an inevitable confrontation with memory and the passage of time. This is where the approaches of Christian Boltanski and Sophie Calle resonate deeply with one another. For Boltanski, the child always ultimately dies to make way for the adult; the blurred faces in Les Enfants de Dijon are ghosts, relics of a bygone age that only the archive can hold onto. Sophie Calle, on the other hand, captures the opposite end of this thread. By orchestrating and documenting her mother’s death, she captures the exact moment when the adult irreversibly becomes an absolute orphan.
Ultimately, the common thread linking all these artists is their radical rejection of sentimentalism. They examine vulnerability with a relentless lucidity and a complete lack of pathos. The scrapes on Mann’s children, the accumulated grime in Kore-Eda’s apartment, Boltanski’s rusted tin boxes, or Calle’s unblinking camera, everything reminds us that while loss is inevitable, the life force deployed to face it holds a wild beauty.
